After the controversy in Saturday’s game between Welling United and Eastleigh, the two teams had to meet again on the outskirts of Southampton and it was the hosts who prevailed.
Scott Rendell and Ben Williamson scored first half goals for the Spitfires either side of Adam Coombes’ twentieth minute goal. Rendell scored again four minutes after the break and when Tom Bearwish made it four, the contest was over despite Anthony Cook’s late consolation strike.
It was all the more galling for Welling that Rendell’s goals were both from the spot after Anthony Cook’s stonewall penalty was not awarded in the latter stages of the first game which could have meant that this game never happened.
Rendell had already had a strike disallowed for offside before he fired home from the spot when Ejiro Okosieme was adjudged to have fouled after Connor Dymond had headed off the line.
Coombes levelled with Welling’s first real chance when Jack Jebb slung in a superb free kick that he headed home.
Bradley Goldberg headed over from a Sanchez Ming cross before Eastleigh went back ahead. Danny Hollands was thwarted by a fine save by Dan Wilks but Williamson won the race to the loose ball and bundled over the line.
Another opportunity came Coombes’ way but he fired over from twenty yards before Tom Bearwish headed over at the other end.
As the first half came to a close Cook surged down the right before crossing. Goldberg couldn’t reach it but it came to Coombes however the angle was against him and he fired into the side netting.
Having finished the first half well, Welling started the second half terribly and an accidental handball in the penalty area by Okosieme was punished by Rendell from the spot via the inside post.
Soon after, the contest was all but ended when Bearwish stooped to head home from close range when he met Jack Payne’s cross.
Goldberg brought a save out of Max Strylek at his near post before the Spitfires goalkeeper made a comfortable save from Coombes.
Nathan Green was next to test him but his drive was too straight and Strylek held on well before Aaron Cosgrave did really well to get into the penalty area bust wasted the good position that he had got into by firing into the side netting.
Four minutes remained when Cook reduced the arrears when finding the top corner from out wide and it could have been an interesting ending but Rob Atkinson recovered well to head Green’s header off the line.
Now that their F.A. Cup run is over, Welling need to show their mettle and bounce back in the league when the host St Albans City on Saturday.
