This evening Welling United are in Vanarama National League South action when they visit Eastbourne Borough.
Two league wins in four days in mid October gave Rod Stringer’s Wings a boost following their five match barren run. However, since then, two defeats have dropped them back to being just six points clear of the drop zone. Their game on Saturday was a particularly tough afternoon when they hosted Chippenham Town. They were three-nil down within thirteen minutes and conceded a fourth in the second half.
Meanwhile, Eastbourne were winning five-two at Hemel Hempstead Town to go top of the table. Former Wing George Alexander opened the scoring for the Sports in the second minute but were two-one down by half time. Brayden Johnson levelled two minutes after the break then Freddie Carter put them ahead eight minutes later. Alexander scored their fourth and fifth to complete the scoring and his hat-trick.
At home, Eastbourne are yet to lose, having won three and drawn four. Alexander is on a five match scoring streak which started when the Sports won one-nil at Welling in the first encounter between the two sides, a few weeks ago.
In last season’s corresponding between the two sides at Priory Lane, the game finished two apiece. Decarrey Sherriff put the hosts ahead by converting a penalty in first half injury time. However, Jephte Tanga levelled and Tristan Abrahams put the Wings ahead. They appeared to be on their way to victory until Siloh Remy restored parity with four minutes remaining.
Rod Stringer, Welling’s manager, will have Alex Lankshear available for selection again following the completion of his one match ban. He is also likely to make other changes to his starting line-up although goalkeeper Rhys Lovett is not expected to be fit to return, and Jordan Gillmore will continue to deputise.
