Following Saturday’s postponement of all football, Welling United return to Vanarama National League South action with a visit to Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday evening.
After seven league games, Welling hold a three point advantage over the hosts having won four, drawn one and lost two. The Sports have won three, drawn one, and lost three.
They have gone three games undefeated and have won their last two home games by beating Dulwich Hamlet and Dover Athletic.
Visitors Welling trounced Oxford City five-nil in their last game. Ade Azeez started the rout in the ninth minute on his way to a first half hat-trick. Stefan Payne scored one in each half and might also have had a claim for a match ball had his first half shot that hit the bar been slightly lower.
In the corresponding game between Eastbourne and Welling, back in April, the Wings claimed a most unlikely, and ultimately valuable point. The outstanding Charley Kendall scored either side of a Mitch Dickenson strike as the hosts went in at half time three goals up.
Dipo Akinyemi pulled one back on the hour mark with a clever back-heel. There were seven minutes remaining when Welling were given a glimmer of hope through Trent Mahorn slicing a diagonal deep cross by Brad Stevenson into his own net. Akinyemi scored again, four minutes later, with an unstoppable drive which earned a point to take the Wings off the foot of the table.
Some Welling supporters will recognise Eastbourne striker Elliott Romain. The former Dartford player is on a one month loan spell from Ebbsfleet United having played for Welling, on-loan, earlier in his career.
