Having opened the season with a victory over Dulwich Hamlet, Welling United visit Eastbourne Borough for their first Tuesday evening game of the season.
On Saturday, the first half was short on quality but Welling defended well and never really looked under any threat.
After the break, Dan Wilks made an outstanding save from an Ashley Carew free kick before Welling took over and went ahead seven minutes into the second half. Jack Jebb put in a fantastic delivery and Thierry Audel scored new-look Welling’s first goal of the season with an accomplished finish.
Carew was then dismissed before Welling doubled their lead. Nassim L’Ghoul crossed, Gavin McCallum brought it down then knocked it across to Jebb, and two touches later it was in the net.
There was no more drama after that and if anyone was going to score again it was going to be Welling.
It will be an early return to Langney Sports Club for McCallum who spent the last four seasons with Borough. Nathaniel Pinney was also there for three seasons but he is not expected to feature as he continues to work towards being match fit. In the other direction, Ryan Hall started for the Sports on Saturday having left Welling at the end of last season.
On Saturday, Borough started their campaign with a solid goal-less draw at Oxford City.
Two seasons ago, Eastbourne hammered Welling 7-3 in the corresponding fixture so it was inevitable that last season’s match was a nil-nil draw. This time around it could be another tight affair as both sides will be keen to build on their good starts to the campaign.
