After ‘chalk and cheese’ home matches, Welling United supporters will probably be wondering which team will turn up at Eastbourne Borough.
Last Tuesday, Welling entertained Chelmsford City and the game looked like a goal-less draw throughout until the visitors were gifted a penalty eight minutes from time and sneaked away with all three points.
Then, on Saturday, Welling drew 3-3 with Bognor Regis Town. They looked a threat every time they went forward but their defending was poor. Manager Jamie Coyle said “If you look at the goals, you won’t see them on a Sunday pitch.”
Having played three games, Welling have just one point but with a little more good fortune and a little more concentration, they could now be on seven points.
There has been more squad movement as Alfie Pavey has signed for Dartford. Cole Brown and Archie Johnson may well travel having got playing time under their belts on Saturday and Coyle will be looking to strengthen when the opportunity arises.
Should Welling manage to combine last Tuesday’s defending with Saturday’s creativity, they will win more than they lose and will give Eastbourne Borough a run for their money on Tuesday night.
Coyle expects Eastbourne to play much the same way as Welling’s opponents did on Saturday. He said “They’ll be very similar to Bognor. Their manager has gone there from last year so they’ll play out from the back.”
So far this season, Sports have also just the one point to show for their efforts. They started the season with a 3-2 home defeat to Braintree Town and then lost at Havant and Waterlooville by the same score last Tuesday.
Their first point also came on Saturday with a very creditable 1-1 draw away at Hampton and Richmond Borough..
Current assistant Welling manager, Hugo Langton, held a similar role at Borough last season when the two teams met in a crazy 7-3 win for the hosts on their 3G pitch..
Nathaniel Pinney put Eastbourne ahead in the fifth minute but Dan Walker equalised before twenty minutes had passed. Gavin McCallum restored the hosts’ lead but one minute later Danny Waldren equalised and the two teams went in level.
Jamie Taylor added Borough’s third immediately after the break but substitute Pierre Joseph-Dubois levelled once more. After Taylor rattled the crossbar, the Sports went ahead once more when Josh Hare netted.
This time there was no come back for Welling and Eastbourne stunned them with three more goals scored by a Taylor brace to complete his hat-trick, and a second for Pinney.
It’s hard to predict what the score will be this time around with the two teams having identical records right down to five goals scored and seven goals conceded.
