Dynamos edged after epic clash

It was the game that had everything as the Invicta Dynamos lost to Bracknell Bees on penalty shots on Sunday night.

In an evening that was marred with controversy, the Dynamos were extremely unlucky not to have come away with the win against a Bees side that were given a run for their money.

The talking point of the evening though was the shocking incident that left Dynamos forward Mason Webster knocked out and having to make a trip to hospital.

Sixty minutes of non stop, end to end action saw the game end 4-4 with it hard to tell which side had played in the EPL last season.

A fired up Dynamos took to the ice with Ashley Jackson back on the roster having missed the previous evening’s cup game at Streatham through illness, but Harrison Lillis was forced to sit out the game.

It was the home side that took the lead in the opening seconds of the sixth minute as Callum Fowler sped down the ice and roofed home despite the Dynamos playing shorthanded.

The lead lasted just five minutes though as Frantisek Bakrlik tapped home from close range after a deflected shot left the Dynamos defence unable to stop the import scoring.

At 17:11 it was the visitors that took the lead as former Mo, Callum Best, roofed over the shoulder of Dynamos netminder Damien King.

Just 21 seconds before the first break and the scores were level once again as Joshua Condren took full advantage of an Ondrej Zosiak shot that wasn’t held.

The second period was as entertaining as the first with the Dynamos going in front once again in the 23rd minute with Condren grabbing his second of the night, roofing over Alex Mettam in the Bees goal.

An epic fight between Mason Webster and Joshua Tetlow saw the pair trade blows for what seemed ages with the latter having the better of it, but the former drew blood from his opponent.

As the pair sat in the penalty boxes, left to cool down, the Dynamos made it 4-2 with Fowler securing his brace, escaping one on one before rounding the netminder and scoring.

At 30:26 it was back to 4-3 as Danny Ingoldsby tapped in from close range as King tried valiantly to hold onto a Bakrlik strike. King suggested the puck had been kicked home, but the officials still awarded the goal.

With the game going into the final 20 minutes with the home side still leading 4-3, it was still very much on a knife edge and anything was still possible. What happened for the rest of the evening can barely be believed.

Time and time again King kept the Dynamos in it, whilst the home side failed to find that all important crucial goal at the other end. With little over two minutes left on the clock, the Bees made it 4-4 with former Mo, Steve Osman, linking up well with Josh Martin roofing over King.

So into overtime it was.

Just 87 seconds of the five minutes had passed when the incident of the night happened. With most fans and players following the puck, Bakrlik elbowed Mason Webster in the head and the Dynamos forward dropped to the ice by his own goal.

Some twenty minutes of medical attention saw Webster leave the ice on a stretcher, whilst Bakrlik was handed a five minute and match penalty for his assault.

The two sides couldn’t be separated in the remaining overtime and it was to penalty shots, with King already having denied Thompson from a penalty shot awarded to the Bees in the 63rd minute of the game.

Penalty shots went thus, Jan Bendik (Bees) had his shot saved, Fowler (Dynamos) had his saved, Thompson (Bees) scored, Jackson (Dynamos) scored, Alex Barker (Bees) scored, Adam Rehak (Dynamos) scored.

So it was straight to sudden death. Fowler (Dynamos) once again had his shot saved leaving Shaun Thompson to score his, giving the Dynamos the one point and Bracknell Bees two.

In the end, the result didn’t matter much to the Dynamos fans who left the rink proud of how hard their side had battled, relieved that Mason Webster was at least talking, but on his way to hospital in an ambulance.

What happened in this game would result in criminal proceedings if happened on a High Street on a Saturday night and video footage issued to the league will undoubtedly see Bakrlik pick up a lengthy suspension for his dangerous and foolish actions.

For the Dynamos, they should take great confidence from this performance and will head into next Sunday night’s clash at home to Streatham in the Cup knowing the game means nothing, but will still want to win.
