Following Saturday’s draw Welling United travel to Dulwich Hamlet in the F.A. Trophy replay to decide who travels to Wingate and Finchley.
When the two sides met at Park View Road, Welling had the lion’s share of the possession and the vast majority of the chances but were undone by a highly contentious penalty decision. However, despite all their superiority, Dulwich goalkeeper Preston Edwards was rarely tested.
Even their opening goal had a touch of good fortune about it. It was a case of ‘you make your own luck’ though. Michael Chambers tried to make a clearance but Matt Paterson went for the block and it came back off him and flew back into the back of the net.
Their lead didn’t last long though. Nyren Clunis made a run into the area and Caden Genovesi made what appeared to be a perfectly timed tackle. The referee and his assistant had a chat and between them they awarded a penalty to Dulwich. Although Dan Wilks went the right way, Ashley Carew’s penalty was too accurate and too well struck and the scores were level.
It could have been worse for Welling soon after when Carew’s free kick came back off the angle of bar and post.
In the second half Welling played the more attacking football but were unable to break through and had to settle for the draw.
Other than a London Senior Cup tie when Welling agreed to play a home draw at Corinthian-Casuals, Welling have not played an away game since visiting St Alnans City on 30th October.
They have also struggled with midweek games having lost three out of three evening league games, their only three league defeats of the season. They will hope to arrest that form when visiting Dulwich Hamlet’s temporary home at Tooting and Mitcham.
