Before Brad Quinton took the reins at Welling United, they had only won once on the road all season but victory at Dulwich Hamlet was their third away win in four.
Romoney Crichlow-Noble scored the only goal after just eight minutes but although Welling controlled most of the game they were still indebted to goalkeeper Dan Wilks who made some stunning saves.
Gavin Rose may have thought that the young Welling team could be roughed up and David Ijaha made the first of his countless fouls with less than ten seconds on the clock.
Storm Dennis made conditions very difficult and Wilks did well to hold a long free kick from Joe Bedford that swirled in the wind but Welling scored soon after.
Another foul allowed Anthony Cook to deliver a free kick. It found Crichlow-Noble and although his first effort was blocked, it came back to him and he made no mistake with the follow up.
Wilks made a good save when diving to hold a long range effort from Ben Chapman before Bradley Goldberg went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Christian Smith but nothing was given.
Cook fired over from a Dipo Akinyemi pull back but he might have done better with his next chance. Goldberg was again too good for Smith and he pulled it back to Cook but he was unable to keep it down when well placed fifteen yards out.
As the first half came to a close, Dulwich had their best spell and Wilks was twice called into action. First he made a stunning save from Quade Taylor’s downward header then he made another excellent save from a Nyren Clunis shot.
Six minutes after the break, Crichlow-Noble was victim of a flying elbow that felled him and ended with him being taken away in an ambulance to be checked out for a potential broken cheekbone. Connor Dymond came on and was penalised for a nothing foul when he squeezed up on Danny Mills and the referee produced a yellow card much to Quinton’s dismay.
Nathan Green had a low free kick saved after yet another Ijaha foul before Goldberg drew a save out of Charlie Grainger with a shot from outside the penalty area.
Clunis met a Jeffrey Monakana cross with a first time shot that Wilks held from close range before Mills lashed wide from the edge of the box.
Phil Roberts was next to receive a ridiculous yellow card when stretching to keep it in, he launched it down field and was apparently penalised for kicking it away.
Soon after, Welling could have finished the game as a contest. Diaz Wright and Cameron James combined superbly and the former was sent clear but he fired over when a low shot towards either corner would have been the better option.
James was then felled by another wild Ijaha challenge and the melee that followed ended with both players being cautioned. Ijaha was withdrawn almost immediately with another former Wing, Dominic Vose replacing him.
Deep into injury time, a long punt forward from Jack Connors caught in the wind and Wilks had to be alert to tip over but when Wilks made a comfortable claim from the header from Mills, Welling were soon able to celebrate their victory with their supporters.
