Driscoll secures Olympics place

World number one trampolinist Kat Driscoll sealed her place in next year’s Olympics at the Trampolining and Tumbling World Championships in Birmingham on Thursday.

British champion Driscoll, from West Rainton, was the last British woman to begin her competition and performed an excellent compulsory routine, with very little movement from the centre spot.

For her voluntary routine, Kat – who trains at the Apollo club in Washington – needed all her experience as she had to amend the order of skills after hitting difficulties.

She finished in ninth place in qualification, but with only two gymnasts per nation making the final, Kat jumped up to seventh to make Sunday’s final and claim an Olympic place for Britain.

“We were all pretty nervous coming in to the arena understandably, but we went out knowing we’d done enough training and were prepared,” she said.

“My compulsory routine was around the score I was hoping for and what I have been performing throughout the season. My voluntary I had a little mistake but recovered and finished the routine so it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for but it was clean.

“Training at the arena has been great. I couldn’t have asked for more it was just small mistake on the day. We’re so proud of what we’ve done, I’m proud of the other girls and what they’ve achieved. “

Driscoll, though, was the only gymnast out of both the men’s and women’s teams to earn a place for Britain at London 2012. The other members of the team have another chance to qualify at an Olympic test event in January, where only one place is available per country.

Olympic champion Wenna He of China topped the women’s qualifications yesterday ahead of team-mate and defending world champion Dan Li.

It was an agonising day for Driscoll, who competed in the first group and had to wait eight hours to see if they had qualified for the final.
