Kent’s Shakey Shane Byrne had to settle for another brace of second places in this weekend’s MCE British Superbike Championship from Donington Park.
Once again it was a fantastically entertaining weekend with Shane struggling in practice and qualifying, before finding the speed in his bike for the races on Sunday.
It promises to be an entertaining run to the showdown as the young pretender to the crown Alex Lowes takes the momentum with two victories this weekend.
In race one Shakey moved up from his fourth place grid slot to second place by the end of the first lap and from there it was a battle with Alex Lowes for the win.
He sat on the back wheel of Lowes on his Samsung Honda right the way round Donington Park as he looked for an opportunity to take the race victory.
Unfortunately he couldn’t do that and he had to settle for second place and pick up valuable points in the Championship ahead of the showdown.
Speaking after race one Shakey, said: “To be honest I firstly need to thank the team and K-Tech suspension as the pace the boys were setting in warm up left me thinking ‘what the flipping hell am I going to do here’. The boys made some changes and then in the race I got a good start and Alex was setting a great pace.
“Fortunately there were some places where I was faster and I lined up something that I thought would be good enough for the last lap but as I exited Coppice I went for fourth gear and got neutral instead which meant I lost my drive and you know the Showdown starts at the next round. The last thing I needed to do was let the brakes off and stuff him into the Loop.
“If you knew how unhappy I was after warm up to how I feel now after race one it is a really good feeling. We are back in the window now for race two after being behind the wall earlier!”
Although the points are wiped out and Podium credits will count from Assen and Silverstone ahead of the final race of the season at Brands Hatch.
It was almost a repeat in race two for Shakey as he started from fourth on the grid and settled in behind Alex Lowes for the race distance.
He looked for a way past on a few occasions and was waiting for Alex Lowes to make a mistake that he just didn’t really make to open the door wide enough. At one stage Shakey dropped down to fifth before working his way back up to second.
Then on the final lap Lowes made a small mistake going down the hill and it meant that Shakey could make the move and Lowes snatched the lead back a corner later and it was a fight to the finish for the duo, Lowes got the win by five hundredths of a second in a thrilling finale to the race.
