Mike Bushell had an excellent weekend at Rockingham as the Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup pendulum swung in his favour.
Bushell took first place in Saturday’s race and followed that up with another impressive victory on Sunday afternoon, to net his third and fourth victories of the season.
Qualifying on pole position for round 15 on Saturday, the Tunbridge Wells racer took a comfortable victory and went on to win round 16 on Sunday – which was broadcast live on ITV4 and ITV4 HD – from second on the grid.
Ahead of the season finale at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in five weeks, Bushell has a 34 point cushion at the top of the standings on total scores – a lead of 28 when the category’s ‘drop score’ ruling is taken into consideration, where each competitor subtracts their lowest two scores from final totals.
Speaking after the weekend a delighted, Bushell said: “It’s just been a perfect weekend really. To get pole and two wins, it’s the best it could have gone. Obviously, I’ve been helped by [Josh] Cook probably having the worst weekend of the year. I have a good lead now but you have to look at what’s happened to Josh this weekend – it all went away.”
While Bushell enjoyed his best weekend of the campaign so far, erstwhile points leader Josh Cook endured nothing short of a nightmare. Contact in Saturday’s race ultimately led to a ninth place finish and after being adjudged to have made a false start in race two, he was served with a drive-through penalty. Incredibly, his race then ended in the gravel trap at Tarzan on lap 11.
The final two races of the Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup season will take place over the weekend 11th/12th October.
