Double 2nd for Birley at Brands

Rod Birley may have taken a double second place on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch but it didn’t stop him sealing the A class title.Rod Birley at Brands Hatch

Birley now has his sights firmly set on the Quaife Motorsport News Saloon Championship with two rounds of the season still to go.

We caught up with Rod after the latest rounds of the season as part of the Lotus festival to get his thoughts on the races.

He said: “It was a really good event to be at. There was plenty going on, both on and off the track. Great family entertainment.”Rod Birley P2 at Brands

Last weekend saw a massive grid line-up to compete at Brands Hatch and it was an extremely competitive couple of races as Rod explains.

He added: “It is a very competitive championship, and I was expecting a strong challenge, particularly as there were 44 cars on the grid.

“I was hoping to have at least one win on the G.P. circuit as it is my favourite track. However, I have not had good luck on the long circuit, as for the last two years I have retired whilst leading.

“Scoring points at this stage is very important. I was hoping to pass the leader on the last lap in the second race, but the “last lap” board was not shown.”Rod Birley chasing hard at Brands

With Rod having already won the A class he is looking ahead to the main championship which he admits will go right down to the wire.

“Having a close championship maintains public interest. Nobody likes a runaway leader. Every race has been close and hard fought this year.

“The QMN championship always goes down to the wire. After Silverstone in two weeks’ time, there is a long gap until the final two races back at Brands Hatch on November 2nd. It will keep everyone guessing the outcome.

“A full grid of 44 cars is fantastic, and yes it does prove that the formula is right. The variety of cars is also stunning.

“In reality it is going to be very tough, but you never know. Motor racing is often unpredictable, so I just need to give it my best shot.”
