Dorking Wanderers vs Welling United – Preview

On Saturday Welling United are in Vanarama National League South action when they visit Dorking Wanderers.

Two wins in four days gave Rod Stringer’s Wings a boost following their five match barren run. Although still in the bottom half of the table, they are seven points clear of bottom four and only five points outside the play-offs.

Having won at St. Albans City on Saturday, their first league win on the road since early March, they hosted Enfield Town. When the Wings went ahead, they had been on top, however the goal was unorthodox. Daniel Martin delivered an inswinging corner that went straight in.

They then missed a penalty but were still in control until Alex Lankshear was sent off in the second half. Stringer reacted by changing his team’s shape to two banks of four with one up front. Although the visitors had more of the possession, Rhys Lovett was only called upon to make one difficult save and Welling had chances of their own before seeing the game out.

Meanwhile, Dorking were playing at Tonbridge Angels and were also involved in a one goal match, but were on the wrong end of it when they conceded in the fifth minute to a goal scored by Jamie Fielding.

In their seven league home games this season, they have won four, drawn two and lost one, with Weymouth being the one visiting team to leave Meadowbank with all three points.

There has not been a corresponding match between Dorking and Welling for a couple of seasons while the Wanderers have been in the National League. They have only ever played each other four times with three out of four of them having played in Surrey, and all four ending in favour of Dorking.

As much as Stringer would have liked to have played an unchanged side, his team had to dig deep in both of their one-nil victories so he may have to consider bringing in a couple of other members of his squad for fresh legs.
