Disappointing weekend for Paffett

Bromley’s Gary Paffett had a disappointing weekend at the Norisring in Nuremberg where he finished 18th.Garry Paffett DTM

Having qualified in third place for the race on the Sunday afternoon, Paffett was looking to add to the victory he picked up at the Lausitzring, but that was to be as good as it would get for the Euronics Mercedes AMG driver.

He was penalised to start with for jumping the lights and he was given a drive through penalty and rejoined the race at the back of the field.

After a strategy chance Paffett found himself back in contention for the podium with ten laps to go but it began to unfold from there.

He was hit from behind by Motara as he braked to late having exited the pits on fresh tyres, this dropped Paffett back down the field. He continued to race though until the last lap when Motara again would take the Brit out and end their race for good.

Speaking after the race, a dejected Paffett said: “That was certainly a rollercoaster of a race,” said Paffett. “It was disappointing to have managed to fight my way back to the front after the drive-through penalty and to then come away with nothing.

“The car felt strong, just like it had at Lausitzring and we had a great qualifying. I have to thank my team for doing a great job and congratulate Robert (Wickens) for his first victory and pole. We are looking good for the future and although I am 24 points behind the leader we are only half way and still have everything to play for.”

Paffett is fifth in the Championship with 47 points. His next race will be at the Moscow Raceway in Russia from the 3-4 August.
