Driving for Lawrence Davey Racing, qualifying was where Alex’s difficulties began for the day. Whilst Alex’s best time was good enough for 6th on the grid, the time was disallowed as he exceeded track limits. In an incident filled session, Alex’s second best time was only good enough for 10th.
Race one was stopped after just 3 laps after an accident in which the drivers involved were ok, but the barriers hit in the accident were badly damaged. At the time of the stoppage Alex had progressed to 8th place, where he would therefore start race two.
The second race took place on a new track layout, using the Island circuit as opposed to the international configuration due to the damage caused to the barriers. Alex was in contention for a top 5 position before a gear selection issue on the last lap put him down to 7th place.
Despite the disappointing outcome to the weekend, Alex was encouraged by the pace shown during the day. “It was a tough day for us, but it wasn’t without its positives.”
“I had a faster lap time in race 2 than the winner and our pace was competitive throughout the day. If it hadn’t been for my costly mistake in qualifying the rest of the day would’ve played out quite differently, but that’s racing.”
Up next for Alex is his home race weekend and the biggest event on the calendar, the Mini Festival at Brands Hatch on the 20th & 21st July.
