It could be a record-breaking afternoon on Saturday at Fortress Priestfield if early table toppers Gillingham secure their fifth consecutive League win since the start of the season against early rock bottom Colchester, and midfielder Tim Dieng has been talking to KSN ahead of the game.
“It’s amazing to be part of this,” the Frenchman admitted. “It’s the best start that we could have, and we really want to keep the momentum going, we’re working hard in training and are preparing well for every game!”
“The togetherness has helped us get over the line in the games so far as we are a good group, we work hard together so we are solid together, haven’t conceded a goal in the League so far and we’ve been scoring every game. It’s been a team effort and its working at the moment, and we’ll do all we can to keep that going.”
“As a player you want to play every game, but the manager is the boss and he picks the team and makes the decisions, so we “just” have to go with it, but every player has accepted the rotation and will still work hard to be ready for when the call comes.”
“It’s good to be able to adapt when you play against different opposition, we’ve got versatile players in the team that mean different shapes and systems on the pitch and that’s a good thing to have.”
“Saturday is going to be a tough game. Obviously, they’re going to come under some pressure even though its only their fourth game of the season, but they haven’t won a game so far. They will come fast and come to give us a good game so we will have to prepare well and that’s what we’re doing and ready to play and get three points.”
And if the Gills are successful at Priestfield on Saturday, it will set a new club record of successive League wins from the start of the season. Dieng did know this, “admitting, I knew we had a record for most same scores but not that so guess we’re going for another record then!”
“It’s a bit early to make too many promises, but I think we’ve got the qualities to play for promotion, there’s competition for most places and that pushes each other to perform, or you’ll lose your spot in the team. That’s a good thing as that’s what happened at Exeter when we got promoted out of League Two. I can see the same type of thing here and that’s a good sign. I’m not going to say now that we’re going to get promoted but we’ve got the squad to do it!”
