Batsman Sean Dickson is hoping he can break into the Kent first eleven this season having agreed a professional contract.

Sean Dickson2

The 23 year old was born in Johannesburg and has already played first class cricket for Northerns in South Africa, making his debut in 2013 and played as recently as January 2015.

However, it’s been his performances in the Kent second eleven that have earned him rave reviews, hitting four centuries since donning a Kent shirt at Polo Farm back in May.

Now set to stay with the county for the next couple of seasons, Dickson, who qualifies as an English player due to his mother being born in Beckenham, is keen to be given his chance to impress and show why he has been given a deal with Kent:

“I am very pleased and I’m glad it was all sorted, eventually. It’s a real privilege to join a great team with great supporters.”

“I got in touch with my agent and he arranged the Kent trial and it all kicked off from there. I got some good knocks under my belt and I’ve been going like a house on fire.”

“I am trying to stay as humble as possible and as level headed as I can, but I am lucky to have got my chance and lucky that maybe a few dropped catches have gone my way.”

“I’d like to get a few scores in the Championship before the end of the season and maybe get a run in the One Day format, that would be nice.”

“It will be hard to knock anyone out of the T20 side as they’ve been playing so well.”

When pressed where he sees himself slotting into a four day side for Kent in the future, Dickson admitted he was happy to slot in wherever needed:

“It’s obviously going to be difficult to fit into the Kent first side with Joe and DBD opening the batting and you can’t really change that.”

“Keysey will come back in at three and I’d just be grateful to slot in at somewhere like five or six. I’d just be thrilled to be playing for the first side.”

Having started the year playing for Northerns in South Africa, Dickson started the English summer playing for Woolpit in the East Anglian Premier League.

After making the move over to England, Dickson is looking forward to a more professional set up at Kent:

“It’s a lot more structured here than back at home. My mum is proud having come from Beckenham and my brother is in Gillingham.”

“I am sure he will be around watching me and I seem to have slipped my way into the Kent family.”

“The East Anglian Premier League is very tough and I think it’s the third hardest league in Britain, so I’m not surprised some South Africans have come out of there.”

The Dickson story is one of fairytales and it’s really been only in the past few weeks that he’s come onto the radar of many Kent fans and the talented batsman is hoping he can use that to his advantage:

“It’s all happened very quickly after the registration took some time and there was a lot of speculation around my signing.”

“These past few weeks have gone very quickly and I have been lucky to have batted in the second team with people like Brendan Nash and Darren Stevens.”

“I got on really well with Brendon Nash and I see him as a mentor in my career now and luckily he’s only a phone call away which is very nice.”

“I had the privilege of batting with Stevo and Keysey, getting to know them a bit more in the changing room.”

“I was very lucky to bat with Stevo during that knock at Maidstone (eventually out for 177) and I remember being on about 140 trying to play a rash shot and Stevo came down and he asked me if I’d ever scored a two hundred.”

“I said no and he said today’s your day so stopping playing that rubbish and get on with it!”

Despite being born in South Africa, Dickson has only one real choice as to who he should play international cricket for given the chance according to his mother:

“I am under absolutely no pressure and my parents are really supportive of my achievements, but it will have to be England for sure.”

Dickson has missed out on selection for Kent’s County Championship game against Essex at Tunbridge Wells beginning on Sunday despite being named in the initial squad.

He is expected to feature in the Kent Premier League for the remainder of the season when not required by the first eleven.
