World cup winner, Alou Diarra, has left the Addicks by mutual consent, and explained his reasons for leaving to the club’s website as follows:
“I hope that the future for the club will be great because Charlton is now my family and the fans deserve for this club to get back to where it belongs.
“Last season was very difficult, but I gave everything for the shirt and always tried to do my best. It is now the right time to leave for me and my family to go home to France.
“Charlton will stay in my heart for the rest of my life and I know that I will be back to watch some games in the future,”
Shortly after that announcement was made, came the surprising news that Diarra had signed for Nancy.
Now 35-years-old, Diarra joined the Addicks in early 2015 and made 45 appearnces for Charlton.
He broke his foot in the game against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Boxing Day, and has been troubled by it ever since.
He picked up his latest knock in the pre-match warm-up at Welling on 9 July.
Diarra’s departure leaves a gap in the squad which Russell Slade may want to plug.
The 2014 Player Of The Year, Diego Poyet, also had his contract cancelled by mutual consent on Wednesday.
After a promising start, Poyet made just ten appearances for West Ham during his two year stint in East London.
He spent the first half of last season as a loanee at Milton Keynes. He switched to The Valley in January, but looked a shadow of the player who left 18 months earlier.
Still only 21-years-old, Poyet is similar in style to Diarra, and could come into Slade’s thoughts if the manager decides he needs to replace Diarra.
