Derby have been rejuvenated under Steve McClaren and sit comfortably in the play-off zone. Charlton will be without Johnnie Jackson through suspension and have one or two injury doubts as well.
Yann Kermorgant looks a pale shadow of his former self at the moment, so Chris Powell has plenty to think about ahead of Saturday’s clash at The Valley. To get something from the game, the Addicks will have to play to their potential and avoid unnecessary errors.
That includes errors in personnel and formation, as well as individual errors by the players. Dale Stephens has shown his best form recently, though his performances dipped at both Reading and Yeovil.
Stephens is at his best when used as the attacking central midfielder in an orthodox 4-4-2 shape. He was substituted at Reading and spent much of the game at Huish Park playing on the right side of midfield.
Derby have won their last five games and are full of confidence. Charlton’s confidence would have taken a dive after surrendering a two goal lead on Saturday.
McClaren, despite his traumas with England, is a very accomplished coach at this level. McClaren can change things to influence the game, both tactically and in terms of personnel. Lack of tactical awareness and not making the best use of his bench are criticisms often levelled at Powell.
Saturday will provide the Addicks boss with the ideal opportunity to answer his critics, the man in the opposite dug out is a master tactician.
