Jose Riga deployed a 4-5-1 formation at the iPro Stadium against high-flying Derby County.
Reza Ghoochannejhad and Jon Obika were used on the flanks but had licence to drift in to support Marvin Sordell.
After the break, Callum Harriott came on for Ghoochannejhad as Riga switched to a traditional 4-4-2 shape.
Derby played some good stuff throughout the game and left-winger, Johnny Russell, was a thorn in the side of the Addicks all afternoon.
Charlton created some chances with Johnnie Jackson having the best of them. One of Jackson’s first half efforts brought a stunning save from Lee Grant, who dived to his right and got a strong right-hand on the ball.
All three Derby goals followed Charlton giving the ball away.
Rhoys Wiggins’ misplaced pass led to the first goal after 18 minutes. The ball was played across from the right and found Russell, who had the time to turn and fire the ball just inside Ben Hamer’s right-hand post.
Johnnie Jackson had to deal with an awkward ball when facing his own goal after 38 minutes. The skipper was unable to get enough purchase on his header and Patrick Bamford was gifted the easiest of chances to double the Rams advantage.
Newcomer, Davide Petrucci, came on as a second half sub and six minutes from time, he lost possession in midfield. The Addicks were forced to concede a corner. The flag-kick was whipped in from the right and glanced in by Chris Martin.
Barnsley won 4-1 in the proverbial six pointer at Huish Park and only a stoppage time goal by Blackburn at the Den prevented Millwall taking three precious points. Charlton are still outside the drop zone but they now have Barnsley breathing down their neck, just a point behind.
