Charlton slumped to defeat at Derby on Monday evening as two Jason Knight goals trumped Lyle Taylor’s late penalty to end the Rams’ seven match winless streak.
There were starting places for Chris Solly and Ben Purrington, but the Addicks suffered more injury woe when they lost Macauley Bonne to a hamstring problem.
Derby had Krystian Bielik dismissed early on for a nasty challenge on Conor Gallagher, and Andre Wisdom was fortunate not to suffer the same fate for a reckless challenge on Gallagher.
However the Addicks never really took advantage of their numerical supremacy and turned in a poor performance. The lengthy injury list is taking its toll on the rest of the squad who are looking jaded.
Dillon Phillips saved Martyn Waghorn’s tenth minute shot, but the ball spun up and was bravely headed home from close range by Knihht.
Bielik was sent off shortly after, but the visitors did not take advantage of the situation. Knight got his second of the night 13 minutes from time.
The Addicks cleared a corner, but the ball was quickly played out to Max Bird on the left and Bird’s pinpoint cross was volleyed home by Knight.
Taylor was given the chance to halve the deficit when Gallagher was sent tumbling in the box. He took the penalty with his usual calm swagger to set up a grandstand finish. Ben Dempsey came closest but Ben Hamer’s save denied the youngster.
So Charlton left empty handed and Bowyer made no excuses for his team’s performance:
“I’m disappointed. We’re playing against Derby and they had Krystian [Bielik] sent off early in the game and in my eyes we should go on and win the game. We didn’t for a number of reasons.
“In possession we were poor. We didn’t create anything at all. In the second half until the penalty we didn’t really have a shot.
“We got ourselves into so many good areas out wide, tried to work it, get the overload out wide but the cross in was poor. Our final ball was poor all night long. We were patient and we had to be at times but the quality was very bad.
“Defensively again we conceded another two goals. Credit to Derby they deserved to win today.
“We weren’t good enough and got exactly what we deserved and that was nothing. If we had got a late goal there it would have been harsh on them but we didn’t.
“Does it come back to the amount of games we play at this time and [because of injuries] we have no-one to rotate? Maybe, but don’t get out battled, don’t get out-fought.
“I thought we were second to everything tonight against a good side that can play, then you are going to lose the game against a good side that can play. If anything is our strength it is our fight and our togetherness, maybe the Christmas period is catching up with us?
“It might be, but I don’t like seeing my teams do that. We’ll have to dust them down and we’ve got another game in three days’ time, we can’t let that happen again,” said the boss.
