The Addicks took a hard fought point from the iPro Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of another goal from Tony Watt. Chris Martin levelled for the Rams, to earn Derby a share of the spoils.
Guy Luzon made two changes to the team that started against Queens Park Rangers last week, Cristian Ceballos came in for El-Hadji Ba, and Tony Watt replaced Karlan Ahearne-Grant up front.
Derby were the dominant force in the opening period without causing Nick Pope too many problems.
The Rams largely stifled Charlton as an attacking force, but needed former Addick, Scott Carson, to come to their rescue just after the half-hour mark.
A deep cross from Chris Solly dound Ceballos at the far post, but Carson reacted quickly to smother the Spaniard’s effort.
Alou Diarra had to make a great block to deny Jeff Hendrick in the opening seconds of the second period, but it was Charlton who took the lead two minutes later.
Simon Makienok played Watt in, the in-form striker took a touch before despatching a shot that took a deflection, and looped up and over Carson.
The raucous travelling support went into raptures.
Seven minutes later, Patrick Bauer had to hook the ball off the line, after Ahmed Kashi gave the ball away.
Makienok’s aerial prowess was in evidence at both end, but Martin levelled for the Rams after 69 minutes.
Taking the ball just inside the area, with his back to goal, Martin swivelled and arrowed a shot into the net past Pope’s right-hand.
The game began to open up and Makienok headed a Johann Gudmundsson corner just over, then a Gudmundsson thunderbolt flew narrowly over.
Pope had to tip a shot over for a corner in stoppage time, as the game ended all square.
Derby will again be amongst the favourites for promotion, and Luzon was pleased with the character his team showed and said this after the final whistle:
“I am pleased first with our character. We played here four months ago and we did not touch the ball; we did not have any opportunities to score. Derby were 2-0 up after 20 minutes. Compared to that game, we have improved and developed.”
The defence was solid and resolute and, on occasions, they threatened on the break.
Congratulations to Johnnie Jackson who celebrated his 33rd birthday by coming on as a late substitute. It was the popular skipper’s 200th appearance for the club.
