The South London Press are reporting that defender, Jorge Teixeira, wants to leave The Valley.
The Portuguese defender was brought in by Jose Riga – along with Rod Fanni and Marco Motta – in an attempt to shore up a porous back line.
Teixeira penned a deal until the summer of 2020, and the Addicks will be as keen as the player to see a parting of the ways.
Russell Slade is keen to bring in a blood-and-thunder British central defender, with leadership qualities, as he plots a course back to the Championship.
Charlton also have Patrick Bauer, Harry Lennon and Roger Johnson as senior central defenders, and Alou Diarra can also play at the back.
Norwich City have been linked with creative wideman, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who is currently involved in the European Championships with Iceland.
Gudmundsson signed a four-year deal last summer but is believed to have an escape clause in his contract.
Like Teixeira, Gudmundsson will be amongst the top earners at the club.
Slade has hinted that after securing a key defender, signings will be influenced by which players depart.
Jordan Cousins and Ademola Lookman are other players on lengthy deals who may move on before the season kicks-off.
Financially, the Addicks now need to prune the squad. Cristian Ceballos is another player on good money who Slade may deem surplus to requirements.
It may not be easy to find acceptable deals for players such as Ceballos and Teixeira, and their futures will impact on Charlton’s ability to bring players in.
Who departs, will influence the type of players who come into the club. It is likely that there will be a number of departures before Slade ventures into the market again.
The squad had their first training sessions at Sparrows Lane on Wednesday and Thursday, giving Slade his first opportunity to get his players together.
Tony Watt – another potential departure – took part in both sessions and should be available for the game at Welling next Saturday.
July is arguably the most important month in the football calendar. Slade will have much to ponder as he prepares his squad for the big kick-off at Bury next month.
