Parrett leaves Gills for Stevenage return

Dean Parrett has left Gillingham to join Stevenage for a second spell at Broadhall Way.

The 27 year old signed for The Gills last summer under then manager Steve Lovell, and made a total of 31 appearances across what was an injury hit campaign for the midfielder.

After featuring in an attacking midfield role for most of last year’s pre season, Parrett moved to a move defensive position for the season’s opener at Accrington where he impressed, however picked up an injury in the following game against Burton. That was to be the start of a frustrating campaign that rendered only 19 league starts.

In a Q&A session a few days after his appointment, Steve Evans mentioned how he’d told a few players that they would struggle for minutes this season and were free to leave.

Although fans were left guessing who, answers soon became clearer when Parrett was one of two senior pros, along with Josh Rees, left out of Gillingham’s pre season opener at Faversham. He was then in action with the youth team at Deal Town a few days later after missing a trip to a UK based training camp. Rees also missed the camp and played at Deal.

Parrett will be hoping to reignite his career at a club he knows well. He made 78 appearances for Stevenage between 2016 and 2018, scoring nine goals.

Gillingham manager Steve Evans told the club website that Parrett had ‘conducted himself in the most professional manner’ and mentioned how ‘he will be a big player for Stevenage’.

Parrett will be in line to face his former club when Gillingham travel to Stevenage on July 27 for their penultimate pre season game.
