Despite beating Margate 5-1 on New Year’s Day, Jamie Day was still cautious about Welling United’s current situation.
On the game itself he said “I thought that for the first 35 minutes we were very good and then we got a bit sloppy for the last ten minutes and they got a goal from it. Second half, I thought we got back to where we were and we passed the ball really well.”
Welling’s final goal, scored by Adam Coombes, was a joy to watch. All ten outfield players were involved in the fifteen pass move, the last five of which were one touch. Day purred “I think the fifth goal was a really good goal, good one touch football and the boys are confident so I’m really pleased for them again.”
Since he has taken over as manager, Welling have won six out of six, four in the league and two in the F.A. Trophy. He was keen to share the accolades and said “The boys have got their heads down and worked hard. Maybe a bit of organisation, a little bit of discipline that was probably lacking. When I first came I knew there were good players here, They were a little bit unlucky but they’ve got it together and team spirit’s really good.
“Possibly, they were a little bit individual when I first came. Now you can see that people are working for each other and tracking back. If their mate gets beaten then they’re there to back him up. I’m just pleased for the boys as the work that they’re doing is now paying off.
His immediate target is to ensure that Welling remain in the Vanarama National South. “I still say it. We need to make sure that we don’t get relegated. We’re not out of it by a long shot. We’ve had a couple of good wins and we’ve got a tough month now. with Hemel away, and we’ve got Bromley and then Dartford. We’ve got some big games coming up. It will be interesting to see where we’re at in those games. We want to be looking up the table, not looking behind so just need to keep the run going and keep moving up the table.”
There seems no danger that he and the team will rest on their laurels and confirmed “If you get carried away and think you’ve done enough and take your foot of the gas you’ll get punished for it. We just want to keep winning as many games as we can and hopefully we can get out of the situation that we’re in.”
Sean Francis scored a brace against Margate and Day was delighted for him. “Sean’s done really well and he’s finished for the first one.” Speaking about the second, he stated “ I don’t know if it was a good delivery, I think it was a bit lucky but he’s gambled in the box and it was a good finish.”
Adam Coombes now has 29 goals in 23 games in all competitions which has made him the subject of interest. Day confirmed “When people are scoring goals, they’re always going to be a target If I was a manager at another club I’d look at him. We don’t want to lose him because he’s a very good goalscorer.”
“He knows where the back of the net is. His overall game has improved. His work rate’s improved. If he moves on he goes with my blessing as he’s been excellent for me and I want to see players progressing. If he doesn’t, hopefully we can get forty goals out of him.”
