Invicta boss Neil Cugley has always been a critic of the rush of games that non-league sides are asked to play in the first couple of months of a season – especially with the opening rounds of a whole series of cup competitions making it two games a week for most clubs, particularly in September.
But Cugs was understandably delighted after his side’s exciting victory over Greenwich Borough got them through to the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup, scooping a very welcome £3,000 in prize money.
“I’m absolutely delighted that we got through – we’ve got a lot of excellent people who work so hard raising money for our club, but it takes a lot of work to raise £3,000, and obviously the directors are very happy right now.”
Injuries to Ian Draycott (hamstring) and Matt Newman (knee/calf) mean that Invicta would be below absolute full strength for Tuesday’s Kent Reliance Senior Cup visit to Hythe Town, but, given the strength of the current Folkestone squad, their manager joked – with a fair degree of honesty: “This will be the first time I’ve ever really been able to experiment with a bit of squad rotation!!
“I’d even go so far as to say that it’s worked out pretty well for us to have this Kent Cup fixture tomorrow!”
Even former Hythe player Ronnie Dolan – who has been out with an ankle problem since January – is expected to start along with others currently not always in the first team starting line-up.
At time of writing, the likes of standby keeper Scott Chalmers-Stevens, Nat Blanks, Kwabs Osei, Jordan Wright, Joe Taylor, Euan Sahadow and Salvyn Kisitu are all likely to be included and have a chance to force themselves into contention ahead of the two forthcoming tough home league games – against Staines Town on Saturday and Leatherhead tomorrow week (September 12).
Matt Newman’s injury is not as bad as it first looked after he was forced off inside five minutes of the start on Saturday but he is expected to miss at least a couple of games while Joe Taylor’s return to form and fitness means that Cugley will not be in a rush to force double Golden Boot winner Draycott back too soon.
Hythe thrashed inconsistent Guernsey 5-1 at Reachfields last weekend and have scored nine goals in their last two games so this could prove a lively encounter.
“I don’t know what sort of side Clive Cook will put out, but we’re actually looking forward to the match which is something we couldn’t say about every county or league cup tie we’ve gone into in recent seasons.”
- Former Invicta striker Carl Rook was called in at fairly late notice to play at the back in the Faversham side in their FA Cup tie at Tonbridge.
Possibly recalling an Invicta cup tie there, where, let’s just say, he failed to go the distance, Rooky told pals on social media: “It would be against my old ‘friends’ at Tonbridge, wouldn’t it!!”
But after the Division One visitors won 3-1 at Longmead (where Invicta also won on Bank Holiday Monday) Rooky was in typically bubbly spirits.
“I’m delighted for him,” said his former manager Cugley. “But maybe we’d better hope we don’t draw Faversham in the next round!!”
