Invicta manager Neil Cugley watched Jordan Wright’s loan debut for Ashford United against arch rivals Hythe Town and readily admitted: “Jordan did well and was named man of the match.”
The midfielder made two of his new side’s three first half goals that came in a 15 minute spell at the end of the first half but the boot was on the other foot after the break as Clive Cook’s Hythe came back to draw 3-3 with defender Ben Wilson forcing home a stoppage time equaliser for the visitors.
Ex-Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander, now number two to Jason Whitmore at The Homelands and who is set to take over next season, has clearly soon had an influence at the Nuts and Bolts with big keeper George Kamurasi following him back to United from the south London hotshots while ex-Harlow Town defender and local Ashford lad Charlie Dickens has moved to Ramsgate while United’s Michael McEntagart went to Greenwich.
Manager Cugley and secretary Elaine Orsbourne were among the Invicta officials at the match and Folkestone have arranged a friendly at The Homelands next Tuesday, October 30th, ko 7.45pm to keep the players on their toes.
They were there following the late postponement of Saturday’s home game with Lowestoft Town as heavy rain fell at the Fullicks Stadium until mid-afternoon.
“It was too late to organise anything else, so we had the day off” said Neil.
“But we’ve not got many games this next month and can make good use of that friendly while Elaine’s sorting out a new date for Lowestoft – and for our Kent Senior Cup Semi-Final against Charlton Athletic which will be at home of course.”
Folkestone played a strong Addicks side in the Kent Reliance sponsored competition two or three years ago, losing a close, lively game 1-0 to a Charlton side that included Gus Poyet’s son Diego who joined West Ham United a few weeks later.
Former England U16/U17 and Uruguayan U20 international Diego, 22, is now playing in Cyprus.
Invicta’s place in the semi comes after penalty shoot-out wins over Hythe and Greenwich Borough and their 6-0 victory at Dover in December.
The other semi-final is between Maidstone United and Bromley.
- Ex-Folkestone striker Johan Ter Horst gave his Maidstone side a first minute lead in their National League game against Eastleigh at The Gallagher Stadium on Saturday, but despite leading 2-1 at the break, the Stones went down 3-2 despite Eastleigh having lost ex-Dover goalkeeper Ross Flitney through injury after just half an hour.
