After holding their Premier League neighbours until half-time, Palace’s class was too much for Guy Luzon’s side in the second period.
A Dwight Gayle hat-trick, after Frazer Campbell had opened the scoring, was too much for Charlton. Naby Sarr netted a thumping header to briefly give the Addicks hope.
Luzon rang the changes but Johnnie Jackson and Igor Vetokele were not considered as they were nursing minor knocks.
The Eagles carried the greater threat, but the first-half passed with few clear cut chances, though the hosts had dominated proceedings.
Predictably, Palace manager Alan Pardew, suffered verbal abuse from the large and raucous, travelling support.
The Eagles struck twice early in the second half. First, Campbell received the ball in the area, swivelled, then despatched the ball into the far corner, six minutes after the restart.
Palace then had a goal disallowed for offside, but the respite was brief for the visitors. After penalty claims for a foul on Conor McAleny were waved away, the Eagles took advantage to break away and were awarded a spot-kick, after Alou Diarra was adjudged to have brought Campbell down. Gayle slammed home the penalty .
Midway through the half, Naby Sarr briefly restored Charlton’s hopes when he nodded in a Johann Berg Gudmundsson left-wing corner.
Gayle then added to further goals. Another penalty, when he was brought down by Diarra. The French defender received a straight red card for the challenge, and will miss Saturday’s game at Cardiff.
Gayle then headed home from a right-wing corner, to complete his hat-trick late on .
The Addicks’ fans had started drifting away long before the end.
Luzon will have to lift his troops before Saturday’s trip to Cardiff. The winless streak now stands at five, and the head coach will be anxious that it is arrested as soon as possible.
Palace were rewarded with a trip to Manchester City in the next round.
