City face another trip into London this Saturday when they travel to South Norwood – this time to take on Croydon at the Croydon Sports Arena.
City are going through a tough period at the moment having started the season with a bit of a bang, four consecutive defeats have seen them drop down into the lower half of the table.
City’s last two matches saw single goal defeats, first at Forest Hill Park and then to Staplehurst Monarchs at home. At FHP Manager Dan Lawrence thought that despite controlling long parts of the game with their possession, City could have been out there for hours without scoring, whilst in a feisty encounter on Tuesday, they created a lot of opportunities against the Monarchs to take at least a point from the game, but ultimately were indebted to keeper Tom Benham for a Man-of-the Match performance that kept them always in with a shout after an early goal had been conceded.
For their part, Croydon have started the season poorly and only secured their first win in six matches last weekend when they overran bottom of the table Bridon Ropes by 5-0 after three consecutive defeats, but if they were to win this one, they would leapfrog above City in the standings.
Last season Croydon finished in tenth place in what turned out to be a very congested mid-table with just six points separating eight sides.
But back to City though, after the FHP defeat, Dan was clear in his belief for his players stating that ‘teams go through periods like ours and it’s important that we stick together and keep working hard.’
He went on to say ‘I have no doubt we have a team good enough to compete we just need to get that confidence back and I’m sure a positive result is right around the corner.’ Let’s hope that it is at Croydon on Saturday.
Croydon vs Canterbury City will be played at Croydon Sports Arena, Albert Road, South Norwood, London SE25 4QL
and supporters travelling to the game are reminded that it falls within the ULEZ chargeable area.
