As part of a big weekend for the club, Cray Wanderers entertain Chipstead at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon in the Bostick League Division One South looking to keep in touch with the early pace setters.
As well as the game on Saturday, Cray also launch the revamped plans for their proposed new ground at Flamingo Park on the A20 over Friday & Saturday. Supporters and interested parties can visit the site and see the plans, sharing owner Gary Hillman’s vision of a community hub sports facility and football stadium.
The Wands have groundshared with Bromley at Hayes Lane since August 1998, having previously occupied Oxford Road in Foots Cray/Sidcup from 1973, before ground grading regulations forced them to move five miles from the Crays area. The club formed in 1860 have rarely owned their own ground throughout their 157 year history, but if planning permission is granted by the London Mayor this would secure the future of The Wands for a lot longer.
Back to matters on the field Cray go into the game on the back of two league wins, but had to sit out last Saturday having already exited the FA Cup in the previous round. Tony Russell’s side have picked up eight points from their first four league games and last time out they won 3-0 away at bottom of the table Shoreham.
Chipstead arrive with no points from their four league games, but they did beat Littlehampton 4-0 in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday, which will have helped lift the Anthony Williams’ sides confidence, striker Sam Bell scoring a hatrick.
Wands manager Tony Russell will have been pleased with the goal scoring form of young forward Bradley Stephenson in the last two matches and the fact the team has kept clean consecutive sheets as they look to mount a push for the play offs.
