Cray Wanderers vs Canvey Island – Preview

Cray Wanderers are back in Isthmian League Premier Division action on Saturday afternoon when they entertain Canvey Island at Flamingo Park.

The Wands go into the game sitting in ninth place with 48 points from 33 games, having lost 2-1 away at Chichester City last weekend. Soul Kader was on target for Cray, his fifth goal on four games since joining Neil Smith’s side on loan from Bromley last month.

The loss in Sussex ended an unbeaten run of four games, which had briefly ignited talk about a possible late play off challenge.

Canvey Island make the trip across from Essex sitting in eighteenth, with 35 points from 32 league matches, five points above the bottom four. Last Saturday The Islanders picked up a vital point when they drew 0-0 at home to play off chasing Dover Athletic.

Brad Wellmen’s side haven’t scored in their last four competitive games, but they did beat Chelmsford City in the Essex Senior Cup Semi Final on penalties after a 0-0 draw in that run.

When the sides met in the reverse fixture in November The Gulls won 2-0 with a double strike from Bradley Sach. This game looks set to be another close fought encounter with Canvey Island looking to edge away from the relegation zone and The Wands aiming to get back to winning ways.

Cray Wanderers players will be wearing black armbands as a tribute to lifelong club man Peter Jackson, who sadly passed away last week and will be missed by everyone connected to the club.

Tickets for the game are £12 for adults and £6 for concessions, with an excellent printed programme at £3.  Kick off is at 3pm.
