Following on from Tuesday night’s dramatic comeback win at Potters Bar Town, Cray Wanderers are back in Isthmian League Premier Division action on Saturday afternoon when they entertain Merstham at Hayes Lane.
Grant Basey’s side came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in midweek thanks to goals from Jamie Yila, Ethan Kaiser and an injury time own goal. Having had three points deducted by the league earlier in the week, the win in Herts put Cray back on 23 points from 28 matches played, leaving them in twentieth place, which is the relegation play off spot, just one point off the safety of fourth from bottom.
The team also received a boost with the return of Sam Wood to the club having left Dover Athletic and he made his debut at Potters Bar Town. Wood started his career with The Wands back in 2003 and has returned home after also playing for Bromley, Brentford, Wycombe Wands & Eastleigh.
Merstham make the trip over from Surrey sitting in fifteenth with 30 points from 26 league games played. On Monday night Frank Wilson’s team lost 1-0 away at Carshalton Athletic, but just like Cray The Moatsiders have won twice in their last five matches.
When the sides met in the reverse fixture in November, Merstham won 2-0 thanks to goals from John Ufuah & Korey Henry, but The Wands squad has changed significantly since then as well as the management.
With Cray looking to kick on from Tuesday’swin and move out of the bottom three this looks set to be a good game with a lot at stake as we head into the final quarter of the league campaign.
Entrance for the game is £10 for adults and £5 for concessions with an excellent printed programme for £2.
