Following Saturday’s dramatic comeback win over Chipstead, Cray Wanderers are back in Ryman League Divisions One South action at Hayes Lane on Wednesday night when they entertain Horsham.
In their first season back up from county league football The Hornets travel up from Sussex in thirteenth place with 24 points from their 19 games, having lost their last two matches 7-1 to Dorking Wanderers and 2-1 to Corinthian Casuals.
The two sides have met several times previously during their last spell in this division, most famously in the promotion play off semi final back in 2005, when Horsham edged out a Wands side who just ran out of steam at the end of the campaign. When the teams met in the reverse fixture this season back in September Cray ran out 3-2 winners thanks to a last minute goal from Karl Dent.
In the last two home league games Cray have gone into the final fifteen minutes trailing 2-0, but on both occasions have still managed to salvage a 2-2 draw with Whyteleafe and a 3-2 win over Chipstead. Manager Tony Russell will be hoping that for once his side can start a game with the same intensity that they have finished recent matches, but his squad’s never say die spirit is quite remarkable.
With the Black & Ambers sitting in seventh on 31 points from 17 games they are still nicely placed to make a promotion bid with games in hand over most teams above them and a win this midweek would be as great way to keep up the momentum.
Venue: Hayes Lane, BR2. Kick off 7.45pm. Admission £10 adults, £4 concessions.
