Cray Wanderers go into their final home game of the Bostik League Division One South season at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon against Guernsey, knowing that a point will secure a play off spot and a win will guarantee home advantage in the semi final on Tuesday.
The Wands suffered a setback in their bid for a third place finish last weekend with a 5-2 defeat at Walton Casuals and losing central defender Mitchell Nelson to a red card late on.
With right back Barney Williams also missing that game due to injury manager Tony Russell could be without two of the key players in the club’s impressive season. Six of the goals came in the first fifteen minutes of the match and the victory saw Casuals move back into contention for a top six finish themselves.
The Green Lions travel over from the Channel Islands with the pressure off, sitting in eighteenth place having picked up 49 points from 45 games and looking to celebrate another season at this level.
They travelled over to the mainland on Tuesday night losing 5-0 at Corinthian Casuals, who moved up in to fifth.
When the two sides met at Footes Lane in January The Wands won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Michael Power and a similar result would be just what Cray need to go into the post season games with confidence.
Cray currently sit in fourth place with 86 points from 45 games, having scored over 100 goals, which should mean even if results went against them on Saturday they should still just hold on to the last play off spot with a goal difference of +62, reward for this more than creditable return and having played some fantastic football on the way.
With Lewes and Carshalton already promoted, the focus is on the next four places and there may be a few nerves around the grounds on Saturday, with supporters eyes also focused on scores elsewhere.
Five teams will be competing for four play off places and the highest possible finish right up until the final whistle on the final day of the season.
