As the “fuel crisis” hopefully shows signs of abating, Kevin Watson’s Valley side return to The Artic Stadium on Tuesday night for this local derby – only their third home game of the season with the campaign now almost two months old.
After a fine comeback victory at Whitstable Town on Saturday, Watson’s men will be eyeing the league summit against a Phoenix side on the back of five successive defeats – their last coming in a 5-2 reversal against current league leaders Haywards Heath Town at the weekend.
Striker Lekan Osideko leads the way in the goals chart for Sports, although all of his six early season goals have come in the FA Cup.
The Phoenix line-up is likely to feature former Miller Fraser Walker, while another ex-Valley man, Kweku Ansah has been a regular in their line-up this season.
The last decade has been one of great progress for Phoenix after becoming a founder member of the Kent Invicta League in 2011.
Following promotion to the SCEFL in 2013, Sports won the Championship at only their second attempt, along with reaching the fifth round in the FA Vase after a succession of testing away fixtures.
They have since maintained a comfortable mid-table existence in the Isthmian League – their best finish coming in 2016/17 when they finished eighth in the North Division with a very creditable 75 points.
New signing David Ompreon will be hoping to make his home debut for Valley after an impressive performance at Whitstable was brought to a premature end. Following a booking for a late tackle, Ompreon saw red for a second offence within minutes and so will miss Saturday’s trip to AFC Sudbury.
