Ade Yusuff was at the double as Cray Valley Paper Mills overcame Aveley to win the battle of The Millers and advance into the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round.
The visitors from the Isthmian North began the tie and looked to impose themselves physically on the game from the off, utilising long throws & a physical front line.
Both sides looked a bit goal shy with defences on top initially. Ade Yusuff shooting wide at the near post with just under twenty gone being the first clear shot at goal.
The away side were arguably the better of the two sides in the first half, but they didn’t really convert their superiority into goal scoring opportunities.
The best chance of an at times drab first period fell to Aveley’s Alex Clark who fired wide of the far post with the outside of his right boot, after former Millwall man Harry Donovan had his initial shot blocked.
HT 0-0
Aveley came out on the attack from literally the first moment of the second period. The ball was eventually worked to Clark, who forced Andy Walker into a good reflex save down low at his near post.
However, Cray Valley took the lead moments later through Ade Yusuff. Ade Adeyemo made an excellent run to the byline, before cooly pulling the ball back for Yusuff to rifle the ball home into the bottom left hand corner – from around 12 yards.
Aveley did go close from around 25 yards with a well struck free kick. Alex Clark going for the top corner with his shot just whistling over the crossbar.
Francis Babalola went close to doubling the home sides advantage. Latching onto a clever quick free kick and cutting inside. However, George Allen was there to send his effort behind for a corner.
Aveley were beginning to become more & more frustrated with the referee who had made a few interesting decisions. He had cause to speak to a couple of players when they’d perhaps become too vocal in their opinions.
They felt they should have had a penalty for handball with time running out. The referee signalled for a goal kick which led to one Aveley player running 50 yards after him to make his feelings known.
The closest they ultimately came was Donovan’s flicked header striking the outside of the right hand upright after a long throw.
The home side ensured they’d break new ground in the competition again in the last seconds of normal time.
An excellent counter attack was begun by Hassan Ibrahiym who weaved his way past 2 defenders before finding Ryan King-Elliot, who surged up the wing and found Francis Babalola, he toepoked the ball into the unmarked Yusuff’s path for him the smash home into the top corner – prompting jubilant scenes from the home supporters.
FT 2-0
In the end Cray Valley were deserved winners based on their second half showing. They now await the draw on Thursday afternoon and the exciting prospect of a potential tie with a National League side in the next round.
Speaking at the end of the game, Manager Kevin Watson said: ” Tonight was a great a milestone in the clubs history and these moments are for all those that work tirelessly behind the scenes. Cup competitions provide unparalleled opportunity for players but we are fully aware that our priority remains the league campaign which at this point requires great focus and improvement.
