Following Welling United’s draw at Bath City, Welling United player manager Jamie Coyle was happy with his team’s display if not the ultimate result.
“I thought it was our performance of the season.” he said. “I thought the intensity, the quality going forward of the wide boys, completely dictated the game in the first half. We created so many chances. We had two one on ones, great balls into the six yard box but there was no-one on the end of it.
“If I’m walking away from here and we haven’t created any chances, I’d be more concerned.” He continued. “I said to the boys if they show that quality and that intensity, we’ll win more than we lose. I think they’ve had one shot on target, which was the goal, and I reckon we threatened for 95 minutes.”
Coyle made changes, some through necessity, others tactical. Ian Gayle wasn’t risked at right back and with Olumide Durojaiye getting married in Zimbabwe, Connor Dymond had to play at right back. Christian Nanetti was given a start on one wing and Jeffrey Monakana on the other, Coyle had to pick two of Joe Healy, Jack Jebb and Harry Phipps.
Jebb missed out with Coyle explaining “Jack Jebb has been outstanding but I just thought that we needed a bit more of a defensive screen that Harry Phipps gives us because Joe and Jebby are very much attacking midfielders.
“I thought Harry Phipps came in and was outstanding. I know he scored his goal but he won loads of second balls.” Coyle went on to say how well he thought that Healy and Phipps did in covering for each other but was also pleased with Jebb’s contribution when he was introduced. “When he came on, he was outstanding again in the hole.”
Despite the fact that they have had little to cheer in recent years, there was still a decent turn out of Welling supporters and Coyle had praise for them too. “The fans were outstanding today and we’ll give them something to cheer about soon, I’m sure. They’ve stuck by us and they are really positive and that’s what we need.”
As Welling are back in action again on Tuesday, he will be hoping that the elusive away win is imminent.
