Coyle disappointed with Welling draw

Following the topsy turvy three all draw with Bognor Regis Town, Jamie Coyle was disappointed not to have claimed all three points but was excited by the performance overall.

He said “We’ve created enough chances to win four or five games which has been my biggest concern. We worked on it on Thursday and the boys have taken it on board. On another day you get a couple of penalty decisions and you’ve had another couple cleared off the line.

“It’s just the way it’s going at the moment and I said to the boys ‘you’ve got to keep believing and it’ll turn. They’ve worked really hard. I can’t fault their work rate, I really can’t.”

However, Coyle was less happy with his team’s defensive performance. “If you look at the goals, you won’t see him on a Sunday league pitch.” he said “We’ve gone from keeping a side like Chelmsford to no chances to looking really open.

“With the experience we’ve got in our back line, we’ve got to defend better.” he stated. “We’ve got players who’ve played 500 games at this level and the level above, and they’ve got to be a little bit more responsible for their own roles and responsibilities.”

As disappointing as the defending was, Coyle preferred to look on the positive side of the chances created. “We could have scored six or eight and that’s not exaggerating. Even their manager’s come up and said ‘I can’t believe you didn’t win comfortably’..”

“The fact that we had two up front meant we had more of a threat. When you’ve got a target man (Tom Bradbrook) and Brad (Goldberg) around him, I thought both of them together were causing problems all game.”

Joe Healy scored the goal to equalise at 3-3 and he also drew praise from Coyle. “I thought Joe Healy did well, especially in the second half when he dictated it a little more going forward. He’s an asset to us. “You’ve got to remember he’s had no pre-season so he’s still actually finding his feet again and his match fitness. He’s only going to get better and stronger.”

Even though it’s early in the season, Welling only had four named substitutes. Coyle explained “Archie (Johnson) had the opportunity to go and play for Stansfield today. He needs games. It’s no good him sitting on the bench and not coming on.

“Cole Brown’s the same. He had the opportunity to play for Uxbridge so he got 90 minutes under his belt.”

There was no substitute goalkeeper on the bench but Coyle said that the problem was being addressed. “We’ve got a couple (of options).” he confirmed. “One (Jack O’Malley) is dual registered whose playing in the Northern League and we’ve got one in today who’s potentially going to sign.”

Welling’s next game is at Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday evening.
