Coventry City v Gillingham preview

Adrian Pennock is desperate to get his first win in charge of Gillingham at Coventry City this weekend.

The former central defender takes his side to face a Sky Blues team sitting bottom of the League One table, but having failed to pick up a win under their new Head Coach.

Pennock watched on as Gillingham let a winning position slide against Chesterfield on Tuesday night, with the game ending up 1-1 after the visitors equalised in the 94th minute.

The Gills boss couldn’t hide his frustration after that game and has this to say at the time:

“I am unbelievably angry,” said Pennock, who took his frustrations out on the fixtures and fittings in the Priestfield dressing room during a post-match rant at his players.

“We should have been out of sight. If you keep clean sheets you win games and the goal we conceded was unacceptable.”

“I told them a few home truths afterwards. I apologised to the chairman because I have just done a few things in the (changing room) where things got broken but that happens doesn’t it?”

“It was very poor they should be winning that game three or four nil in my opinion. I feel bitterly disappointed for the fans because they were top drawer.”

“To concede a goal like we did was not good enough and I feel sorry for them. They got behind the boys from the first whistle and they knew what it meant to us.”

Pennock has since had a few days to cool down and is now preparing his side to face a Coventry side that he feels could still prove to be a stern test:

“You look at Coventry’s team and squad, they are in a false position. But the most important thing to us is getting the three points.”

“Russell Slade is a very good manager and I’m looking forward to meeting him again on Saturday. He will have his team playing well.”

“Be it Coventry City or Sheffield United, we go to win games. I never set out to get a draw. We need to get basics right on Saturday.”

Pennock has a few injury doubts ahead of the game, with Chris Herd back in training after a hamstring problem ruled him out of the midweek draw with Chesterfield.

On-loan Bournemouth striker Joe Quigley has stepped up his recovery from a knee ligament injury, but Pennock revealed fans will have to wait to see him in action:

“Joe played 45 minutes for Bournemouth’s reserves on Wednesday, but their club doctor wants him to play 90 minutes next week, so it’s in their hands.”

“Joe said to me that he was told if he played 45 minutes in the week then he should be ready for the Coventry game, but that wasn’t to be. The doctors have the power, and are looking after him to make sure he is 100 per cent to come in straight away. It’s disappointing but he’s chomping at the bit to get back.”

Winger Harry Cornick, who is also on loan from the Cherries, is close to a return from a groin strain.

Defender Aaron Morris (knee) remains a long-term absentee.

Coventry’s Jordan Willis is back for the visit of The Gills, whilst striker Stuart Beavon has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and remains a doubt for Russell Slade’s side.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni made his Coventry debut in the 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon in the week and Slade could opt to start him against Gillingham with the Sky Blues looking for their first league win since November.

Derby loanee Charles Vernam remains out with a shoulder injury but could return by the end of the month.
