Former Wasps, London Welsh and Richmond lock Matt Corker will be part of a new look coaching team when Canterbury Rugby Club players report for pre-season training on Tuesday July 4th.
He will also be adding his top flight playing experience to Head of Playing Andy Pratt’s squad when their National 2 South campaign gets under way in September.
Kent man Matt, from Ramsgate, joins former Sale and Canterbury prop Matt Pinnick, who steps up from his Pilgrims coaching role, as the men in charge of the city club’s forwards.
Corker, who started his rugby career at Chatham House School in Ramsgate and went on to represent England Universities, says he is relishing the challenge.
“It is nice to come back to Kent and to a club which is investing in players from the area,” he said.
“I am excited by the freedom that coaching gives me and I am hoping that my experience as professional player will help me to add something to the team.”
Matt, who was forwards coach at Imperial College last season, will also have a community coaching role, taking the game to local schools as part of plans to widen rugby’s appeal in East Kent.
The 6ft 6in tall lock spent four years on the books of Premiership side Wasps and played for London Welsh for nine seasons.
Canterbury Head of Playing Andy Pratt said: “With such a young squad, Matt’s experience and knowledge will be vital in their development.”
“I’m delighted he has chosen to join us and look forward to seeing his own development as a coach as he makes the transition from playing.”
Men’s training starts on Tuesday 4th July (7 for 7.30pm start) at the club and continues every Tuesday and Thursday. All players are welcome to attend. Please email [email protected]if you would like to take part.
