Mike Conway will be commencing his 2017 campaign when he competes in the 24 hours of Daytona this weekend.
Mike will be racing in the first round of the 2017 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Action Express Racing.
In the #31 car, lining up with fellow Brit, Seb Morris and American’s Eric Curran and Dane Cameron. The race weekend gets underway on the 28th January 2017, getting behind the wheel of the Cadillac powered LMP2 car.
Mike has already showcased his talents in America competing in the IndyCar Series from 2009 to 2014, where he collected four wins. However, Mike has never appeared at the Daytona International Speedway meaning this weekend marks his circuit debut, in a new car, in a new team and in a new championship.
Mike’s last trip over the pond saw him collect a podium finish at the 6-Hour of the Circuit of the Americas with Toyota Gazoo Racing in the World Endurance Championship.
This time around Mike will be hoping to taste similar success with Action Express Racing; a team that has already experienced success, taking victory in 2010 and 2014 and finishing their two cars last year in 4th and 6th place, respectively. Mike will be looking to add his name to the list of famous winners when he tackles the 3.56-mile circuit, which include Derek Bell, Martin Brundle and three-time winner, Juan Pablo Montoya.
“I’m looking forward to racing the Daytona 24 Hour with Action Express Racing. It is a race I have always wanted to do and I have been working hard with the team for the past month in preparation for this weekend in Florida. 24-hour races are always challenging but hopefully we can be fighting for the win!”
Last year was one of Mike’s most successful in recent years, securing third position in the FIA WEC standings, as well as picking up two wins and seven podiums across the calendar year. 24-hour racing is a discipline Mike knows all about having raced in the infamous 24 Hours of Le Mans in the past two seasons, notably recording a second-place finish with Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2016.
Mike feels optimistic about the race after his winter testing with the team but knows the unique challenges that 24-hour racing can throw up.
“After the roar we are still a bit unsure of where we stack up against the competition but I’m looking forward to the race this weekend. Hopefully we can have a great few days and come away with a good result!”
With five different teams taking victory in Daytona over the past six years, no team enters the weekend as outright favourites. However, there is one thing that is for certain and that is over the 24 hours and 2,600 miles – anything can happen.
