Mike Conway announced his return to the IndyCar race scene just over a week ago in spectacular fashion.Mike Conway - celebrates win

Having bagged a front row, a pole position, a win and a podium place it might make a few people stand up and take notice of the talent that the 29-year-old has for that type of racing.

We caught up with Mike after his fantastic return to IndyCar racing in Detroit to get his exclusive thoughts on the racing and possible opportunities in the future.

Speaking about how the driver came about, he said: “There was talk that the race maybe happening with Dale Coyne on the Sunday before at the Indy 500 event. There was definitely interest at that point and Mark (Blundell) my manager was talking with Dale over the next few days and it all came together on Tuesday.

“It was pretty much pack my bag and I was going to leave Wednesday morning and it was a pretty amazing last minute agreement to go out there and race especially with it being a double header. You had two races and two chances to get a result, and it gave me the opportunity to drive with my former teammate Justin Wilson again, the whole weekend was just a lot of fun.”

Although he hadn’t ever driven the Dale Coyne Racing machine, Mike was confident that he would be able to hook the car up from the first time that he got in the car.

He added: “I had competed in the Long Beach race earlier in the season and I was on the pace but then I had driven that before for half a day and had driven it a few times before that. Once we got up to speed and got used to the layout of the track in Detroit then come qualifying then we were on the front row.

“I was obviously really happy with that and going into the weekend I would have been happy if I was in the fast six in qualifying and to make it to the front row on both races was really good.”Mike Conway10

Having put his car on pole position which was the first time that Dale Coyne had ever had one of their cars on pole, he took it one better and won the first race.

“It was a fun race and I knew that I had to get off the line at the start and get past Hunter-Reay and once I got in the lead it was a case of staying out front, looking after everything and pace things out with Ryan and being able to do that I was able to build a fairly large gap.

“I knew at that point that we had a comfortable lead and if everything went alright with the pit stops and everything I knew that I would be good. Towards the end of the race it was just a case of maintaining the gap.

“It was a dream race really, one of those where everything just goes your way really and the pace is there and you don’t have to do anything crazy to stay ahead. I couldn’t have asked for anything more for that first race.”

The final race of the first double header of the season saw Mike start on pole and finish in third place to round off a weekend that really couldn’t have gone any better for the man from Sevenoaks.

He said: “In 27 years that the team has been going it was their first pole position and it was pretty cool to know that I got that for them. All credit to the team and my teammate for giving me the equipment to do it.

“I knew that winning the first race that I would have a good chance to win the second race on the Sunday as well. It didn’t quite go our way with the yellow flags falling and the safety car coming out and things like that, I still thought we had the car to beat and as the race went on we got back in the lead of the race again.

“Then the red option tyres seemed to go off a little bit too quick and even though they did we were still quick heading out of the pit stop and I was probably stuck behind Dario (FranchItti) for a little bit too long, as I thought it was between me and him for the lead. Dario is a smart guy and he wasn’t going to make it easy for me, so I thought I would take my time on that one and we probably lost about five seconds.

“The team then said that we weren’t actually fighting for the lead, there was two guys ahead of me fighting for the lead, and I think that’s why I lost the race really, and losing that five seconds meant that I had a huge gap to catch-up. I did manage to catch-up but I just run out of laps really, but it was a lot of fun, there was lots going on and it was really enjoyable.”

Compared to Formula One there was far more going on in the Indy race than in some F1 races and it shows why the Americans love the sport.

He added: “There is a lot more going on not just for the driver but also for the fans, you can run pretty close with these cars we don’t rely on the down force so much with these cars that we race.

“It is always fun and in any IndyCar race that you go too there is something happening and we don’t have the DRS and the KERS and all the stuff like that. I think F1 and IndyCar are quite different series and you get fans for one and fans for the other.”

Long term Mike would love to be back racing more often in the series that he loves and has been successful in over previous years.

“I would love to do some more races, hopefully there will be some more coming up after the weekend that we have just had. It hasn’t been all confirmed yet but I think there are talks of some more races with Dale Coyne so that is good and I am looking forward to that.”
