Mike Conway again showed his class yesterday in the first race of the double header Indy Car race in Toronto.Mike Conway in Toronto

The Sevenoaks racer didn’t have the same luck in qualifying as he did the last time he drove for Dale Coyne racing in Detroit, as he could only managed 20th place on the grid.

However, the 29-year-old underlined his potential and driving class by carving his way up through the field on the 1.744 mile street course and finished in seventh place.

Unlike some in front of him he was able to conserve fuel in the early stages of the race which meant he could go longer in the first stint working his way up to 5th place. After the stop he was down in 16th place and worked his way superbly into the top ten of the race, before taking three more places on the closing laps.

Speaking after the race a pleased Conway said: “I think we have improved the car, but we still have some areas where we can gain some more. We are definitely going in the right direction and with warm-up tomorrow, we will be able to try a few more things, which will help.

“The car seemed to have good pace and hopefully we can transfer this to tomorrow’s race and make it even better. The guys did a good job today and we were able to salvage some points with that P7 finish. It will be tough race tomorrow starting from the back so hopefully we can do it all over again.”

By finishing in 7th place it earned Mike 26 points and moved him up to 24th in the Championship even though he has only raced four times this season in the Indy Car series.

Later today he will be back on track as he looks to improve on seventh place in race one, however he will have to come from further back as he qualified in 24th place for race two.
