Mike Conway scored a second consecutive podium in Detroit on Sunday afternoon in the second Indy car race of the weekend.
He followed up his impressive victory in race one by adding third place in the final race of the first Indy car double header of the season.
The 29-year-old from Sevenoaks had started the race on pole, which was a first ever pole for Dale Coyne Racing.
Conway led for the majority of the opening laps of the restarted race, up until his first stop on lap 28. However, he wasn’t put off by this and retook the lead on lap 40. Unfortunately he lost places as the red tyres started to go off, and had it all do when he switched back to the black ones in his final pit stop.
He was back in the top three shortly after his stop and was battling hard for second but eventually ran out of laps and had to settle for an impressive third place.
Speaking after the race a pleased Conway said: “I pushed really hard at the beginning and that may have taken a little bit out of the tyres but they still felt pretty good towards the end. I was catching James Jakes and could see he was on reds, so he started to pull away initially when he first left the pits.
“I thought his tyres would wear out towards the end, and they did, so I used my overtake, the only one I had left but maybe a lap to early. I couldn’t quite get close enough.
“It was tough. You’re pushing maximum effort all the time. Especially on the restarts. You have no time to relax, but you know I feel good. Adrenaline is pumping, but I’m sure I’ll be shattered tonight.”
Conway will next be back in action in Europe for the World Endurance Championships, at the world famous 24 Heures du Mans on 22nd June.
