Mike Conway continued his fantastic Indy Car weekend in Detroit as he netted pole position for Sunday’s race.

It is both Mike’s first ever pole position in the series and it is also the first ever pole position for Dale Coyne Racing as well.

The 29-year-old from Sevenoaks showed that he really does have some fantastic talent to be able to put a car he has barely driven on pole position in one of the most competitive race series in the world.

The qualifying session for race two of the weekend was run a little bit differently, the cars were divided into two groups, based on qualifying results for race one.

After that each driver had 15 minutes to come up with their fastest time with the pole awarded to the best overall lap. Odd numbered grid slots are occupied by the pole sitters group and then the even numbered slots by the second group.

Conway clocked a best time of 78.0977 seconds after switching to the primary option of tyre to net pole position.

Speaking after putting the No 18. Sonny’s BBQ machine on pole position, he said: “We’ve got a really good starting position, with second and first, and we couldn’t have asked for much more coming into this weekend.

“I was hoping I’d make the fast six, but to do it as well as we’ve done is amazing. So big credit goes to the team and my teammate for giving us a good car.

“We just had to hang out and see what we had and it was enough for pole. Excellent job by all the guys at the team at Dale Coyne for making this happen. We’re really, really happy and can’t wait to see how it goes.”

Equally as pleased as Mike was his manager Mark Blundell a former Indy car winner himself, who said: “I am very happy for Mike. To have cut the deal on Tuesday, flown to Detroit on Wednesday and now be starting on the front row today and win pole for tomorrow is extremely impressive. I have managed Mike for seven years and this just shows everyone the talent that he has, it’s a great weekend.”
