Mike Conway capped an amazing weekend by winning the first Indy Car race in Detroit yesterday and it could get even better for him.
The 29-year-old brought his Dale Coyne Racing machine home 11 seconds clear of the field having started the race on the front row of the grid.
It is a remarkable achievement for the Sevenoaks racer considering that he hadn’t even driven the car until practice on Saturday morning.
It is his second Indy Car win and comes two years after he was last on the top step of the podium in Long Beach in 2011.
There was only a brief period where the Kent racer wasn’t actually leading the race and that was during the first round of pit stops, and he made a move stick on Hunter-Reay on lap 44 to regain the lead and he didn’t look back from there.
Speaking after netting his second series win ever, he said: “My manager said my was booked on Tuesday at lunch time so I was like, Ok, I best pack up my bag and get ready for the airport. But you know I cannot thank Dale (Coyne) enough for making it possible and they’ve given me a great car all weekend.
“I just really dialled myself into this track and it kept getting better and better. The car was amazing on the blacks, even on the reds. It just kind of kept a steady pace towards the end there, didn’t want to burn out too bad because if there were any restarts I wanted to have tyres left. A big thank you to all the crew guys, they did a great job all weekend.”
Mike now has the chance to make it a double winning weekend as he starts race two from pole position, and if he can take the victory he will net a $50,000 bonus as well.
