Sevenoaks racer Mike Conway was back in action last weekend just a week after making his European racing return.Mike Conway7

The 29-year-old was back in the United States competing in the Indycar Series that he has spent much of his time racing in for the last few years.

They were racing around the streets of Long Beach a race that Conway knows so well having won around the streets in 2011.

However, 2013 wasn’t quite as successful for him as he failed to finish in the race due to technical issues.

The fact that he didn’t finish the race does not portray the whole picture, as Conway was actually really quick in both practice and qualifying.

Conway is not competing in the full Indycar Series this year but he was invited to race in round three for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team, in their 22nd season.

He managed to put the car fifth on the grid, showing that he has lost none of the pace and talents for driving in the American series.

Unfortunately at the start of the race Conway’s car developed a fault and he started to lose places, forcing him to pit. After the pit stop Mike managed to get back racing competitively and made it up to fourth position.

A safety car would put pay to Conway’s progress however as his car’s battery started to lose power due to an electrical charging fault, this forced him to retire from the race on lap 38.

Giving his reaction to the race weekend, and being back in an Indycar, Mike said: “I’m really disappointed for the team as we had such a great start to the weekend and the car showed such promise that I’m just sorry we didn’t come away with a better result.

“It was fun to be back in Long Beach and congratulations to my team mate, Graham Rahal, for his second place finish.  It’s unfortunate to come away with minimum points as the Blu Cigs car had been great all weekend but I guess that’s racing for you.”

Mike Conway is next back in action in the second round of the World Endurance Championship at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit, on the 3rd and 4th May.
