Contrasting fortunes in GP2

There were contrasting fortunes in the GP2 feature race on Saturday afternoon at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.Adrian Quaiffe-Hobbs - Bahrain

Tonbridge’s Adrian Quaife-Hobbs came home in 17th place where as Jolyon Palmer had a great race bringing his car home in third place.

It was Robin Frijns though who claimed his first win in GP2 as the race series returned to Europe for the first time this year. Felipe Nasr was the driver to sandwich Frijns and Palmer on the podium.

Marcus Ericsson was the man who started the race from pole position and he led into the first corner and avoided the collision behind him.

Sam Bird was slow to get off the line and as Fabio Leimar tried to avoid him he turned into James Calado who was already moving past, and that was to be the end of Calado’s race.

By the time of the first pit stops on lap six Palmer was down in eleventh place and he pitted for fresh rubber and get out and post some quick lap times, as did Frijns who was in ninth and Alexander Rossi who was three placed behind Palmer.

Eventually it was Frijns who held on for the win and pulled away from the fight for second, third and fourth behind him. Nasr couldn’t catch the leader and Palmer held on for third place with Lancaster, Coletti and Dillman all line astern coming across the line behind him to round out the top six.

Palmer is now fourth in the overall driver standings following his third place finish in the feature race this afternoon.

The Sprint race takes place on Sunday and can be seen live on the SKY F1 channel.
