Concord Rangers vs Welling United preview

On Saturday, Welling United travel to Concord Rangers and doubtless, both teams will be happier with a temperature drop.

Last weekend, all the teams in their league, the National League South, had to play two games in three games during the hottest August Bank Holiday weekend on record.

It was a disappointing weekend for the hosts who lost at home to Maidstone United then on the road at St Albans City.

Meanwhile, Welling picked up four points from their two games which they would have probably accepted before the weekend. However, they could easily have had all six. At Chelmsford City, Bradley Goldberg put the Wings ahead late in the game. Had they held on, few would have denied that they deserved it but the hosts equalised in the final minute when a rebound fell kindly to Shaun Jeffers and he prodded it home.

Two days later Welling entertained Tonbridge Angels and returned to winning ways. Goldberg followed up his goal at Chelmsford with a first half brace, first slotting home after Adam Coombes created the opening and then finding space despite being surrounded, and firing home in style.

Adam Yusuff pulled one back just before half time but Gavin McCallum restored Welling’s two goal lead in injury time when getting on the end of a deep Anthony Cook free kick and guiding it home.

When Cook made it four midway through the second half, Welling should have been home and dry but having missed chances to add a fifth, they paid the cost when D’Sean Theobalds pulled one back for the visitors. Alex Bentley then came close and had he scored it might have been a jittery end to the game for the Wings but there were no further opportunities and Welling saw it out.

In the current table, there is only one league place and one point separating the two teams with Welling having the slight advantage in ninth place.

In the corresponding game between Concord and Welling last season, on August Bank Holiday Monday, the Wings put their hosts to the sword. Brendan Kiernan put Welling ahead on fifteen minutes and Jack Jebb made it two just before half time.

Goldberg, McCallum and Thierry Audel all scored in the second period as Welling enjoyed their day by the Thames Estuary.
