Looking to kick start their season, Welling United return to action with an evening Vanarama National League South match behind closed doors at Concord Rangers.
It has been a tough start for the Wings with four consecutive League and Cup games on the road, two blank Saturdays and three games on artificial surfaces. When they played their first home game on Saturday, against Chelmsford City, their team was very different from the one that started the
season.
They started well and had some good opportunities that night have settled them down but they either missed the target or found former Tonbridge Angels, Maidstone United and Dover Athletic goalkeeper Lee Worgan in fine form. Then, on the stroke of half time they conceded a penalty and Alex Teniola converted.
That appeared to knock the stuffing out of the Wings and the Clarets missed an open goal before going further ahead nine minutes after the break. Two more unanswered goals resulted in a heavy defeat and Welling now find themselves one place above the bottom.
Hosts, Concord, will be looking to dust themselves down after coming close to a shock F.A. Cup First Round scalp. Playing at League two Stevenage they were level at one all after ninety minutes and two-all after extra time. Stevenage prevailed eventually, winning five-four on penalties.
In their four league games so far this season, the team based on Canvey Island have won one, drawn one and lost two. Their last two games have been extremes. Following a six-nil defeat at Maidstone United they visited Dulwich Hamlet and won four-one after being one down.
When the two teams met at Thames Road last season the Beach Boys claimed the points with a three-nil win. After the Wings had missed a number of good chances, Lemar Reynolds put the hosts ahead. Joel Nouble made it two midway through the second period and Kreshnic Krasniqi added a third to complete a comfortable win.
